On May 31, 1775, the Mecklenburg Committee adopted a set of radical resolutions. They annulled all laws dictated by the King of Parliament and set forth new laws for governing the now independent Mecklenburg County. Citizens began governing themselves more than a year before Continental Congress severed ties with Britain.
